TRIAL INFORMATION

If you are undertaking a trial, you will need to retain the original box you received your product in, the inner packaging and correctly re-box your product.

Ensure that all components of the product have been thoroughly cleaned and free of any contaminants before returning at the end of your trial period.

How to Use

Assemble the Adept Hood Assembly onto the Base Board Assembly

The Hood Assembly connects to the Base Board Assembly by sliding it over the Hood Support component until it clicks. Ensure the hood film does not snag in the gap between the Hood Assembly and Hood Support while sliding it into place.

Set up the Base Board

Slide the Base Board between the imaging table and the mattress.

If using a neuro image table, align the bottom edge of the soft hood, with the top edge of the mattress. If using a standard imaging table, ensure the entirety of the base board is under the mattress, with the top of the soft hood, aligned with the top edge of the mattress. If on a curved table, use a foam cushion or similar just under the top of the base board to fill the gap between the curve and the board.

Correct Patient Placement

A hair net may be used to manage the patient’s hair. If the patient has long hair, ensure it is flat against the back.

Transfer the patient onto the imaging table, and align the top of the patient’s head, with the bottom edge of the soft hood.

Evenly Distribute Beads in the Hood

Ensure the beads inside the hood are evenly distributed using a downward sweeping gesture, all around the hood. Pushing down helps to fill the lobes evenly. Fill each lobe with beads, whilst ensuring there is enough left at base of the hood. This ensures optimal immobilisation and patient comfort.

You may choose to place an optional drape on the hood support at this point.

Position the Patient into the Hood

Once the beads are evenly distributed in the hood, shuffle the patient up the table, closer to the hood.

Help position the patient’s head correctly. Gather the lobes and ensure the patient’s ears are aligned with the gaps between the lobes so the patient can still hear.

Adjust the Height and Rotation

Once the patient is correctly positioned in the hood, it is a good time to make the fine adjustments to the head height and angulation. Remember to support the underside of the hood support with one hand to avoid the head dropping before the lever is released. While supporting the hood’s underside, you may now lift the lever to unlock and adjust the height up or down, or rotationally left or right of up to 45 degrees either side. Push the lever down to lock it in place.

Neck Flexion/Extension

For more extreme angulation of the neck, adjust the height of the head assembly before evacuation.

For good flexion of the neck, lift the lever and bring the head support to the highest point, generating an angle of approximately 15 degrees. If required, place a towel under the patient's neck for added support.

For neck extension, you can introduce a pillow to be placed just under the patient’s shoulders to elevate the chest/torso of the patient, before lowering the hood down to the lowest position.

Applying Vacuum to the Hood

Two people are required to set the hood up. One person firmly presses the hood sides against the patient’s head prior to the vacuum being applied to ensure immobilisation.

Vacuum is applied with the valve in the open position. Evacuate for 10 seconds to ensure the hood is adequately rigid. After 10 seconds, close the valve and remove the suction tube for the duration of the procedure. The hood will remain will firm.

Secure with Forehead Strap

Loosely pull the forehead strap over the patient’s forehead, ensuring it doesn’t obscure their eyes.

Prior to starting the procedure, ensure that there are no uncomfortable pressure points around their head, and that the hood is adequately firm for the procedure.

If the procedure is going to go beyond 2 hours, it may be worth releasing the vacuum and just check the patient for any pressure or lesions before reapplying the vacuum and continuing the procedure.

Patient Release

Remove the Forehead strap and open the valve to release the evacuation.

Removing the Base Board

Remember to support the patient’s head with one hand, before sliding the Base Board out from under the mattress.

Disassembly

To remove the Hood Assembly from the Hood Support, reach around until your fingers find the recesses then gently lift the clips, and it slide out.

We recommend the components in the Base Board Assembly are not to be disassembled.

Configuring with Other Adept Medical Devices

The STARBoard can be placed on top of the Head Immobiliser Base Board, and below the mattress for radial access. The STARTable can then be positioned as per standard placement.

The Adducted Arm Scoops can be used in conjunction with the Head Immobiliser, by placing it on top of the already positioned Base Board Assembly, and below the mattress.

The Retrograde IR Platform can also be used together with the Head Immobiliser for use during femoral access. The Retrograde IR Platform Base Board is placed under the mattress, below the patient’s thighs, before the platform is placed over the patient and locked into position.
